Commemorating Odisha's ancient maritime legacy, Bali Yatra marks the culmination of religious festivities in the month of Karthik. On Karthik Purnima, traders (sadhabas) ventured in huge boats (Boita) to distant lands like Bali, Java, Sumatra and Ceylon. People float small paper boats with lamps in the Mahanadi River to celebrate this legacy.
