Goddess Lakshmi is worshiped with utmost devotion by Odia women on every Thursday in the Odia month of Margasir. The entrance and doorstep of the house are decorated with artistic Orissan alpana (called chita). A pot made of bamboo canes (mana) is filled with freshly harvested paddy. The Mahalakshmi Purana is recited during the puja.
